According to the factory rep, MC4 connector parts are backordered 16 weeks now due to a tooling failure in the Swiss factory as of March 2010.

    Is that the only factory for the world of PV OEM's, or for add-in cables only

    It is apparently the only factory for all the MC4 connectors and parts in the world.

    This is not good... how did "we" end up with only one supplier in the world? No wonder the damn things are expensive. Anyone have an injector molder in there basement?

    There is no hard and fast rule that MC4 connectors must be used, other mfg's make acceptable types, such as the Tyco SolarLok, The problem is that most major mfg's have settled on the MC4 type.

    Now where wind-sun buys from ( distributor ) maybe having supply issues, but its not only made in one factory in the entire world .. if it was RE world would be all over this.

    I couldn't find any Google hit on the tool broken story either and the only hit for MC4 shortage is this thread, none anywhere else

    All of those are made in China, and there appears to be some issue there also, not sure what it is - but in the past week we have gotten two inquiries from Chinese companies looking to buy those specifically made by MultiContact on the order of 10's of thousands.

    Perhaps it is just a general shortage of certain types, but a test a while back (2008?) in one of the electronics magazines (IEEE digest?) showed that most of the Chinese ones failed to meet UL specs.

    Aside from that, it is quite possible that the MC rep we talked to is full of it and is just making excuses for a non-delivery screwup for connectors that we ordered back in January. Perhaps there actually no "broken machine" but they oversold to Chinese mfg's and all we get is excuses because we only buy a few 1000 a year.

    And why am I not surprised that there is no US manufacturer of them... :blush:
