    Next to useless
No UL cert, so your insurance is void if a fire starts near it
It will ONLY protect your fridge, TV and toaster.  Any gear not line powered, will be unprotected. (Like the radio in your shop, or
your car with electronic ignition.  And having a working fridge, when there is no power for it, is - Oh so useful
I doubt they have actually built a device that is any more robust than the midnight SPDs'

Marketing hype at its finest, reminds me of 1999/2000 when everything was going to fail, stopping the world because of numbers on a  Christian calendar, the year was 2542 Buddhist calendar, nothing would happen to them I guess, there were patches and fixes for all manner of devices. The management of the organization I worked for, paid me double pay 24 hours a day for 3 days, to be available, missing millennium new years celebrations, for the imminent threat to all electronic systems, fire alarms, security systems, HVAC DDC control and such. Nothing happened but there was a lot of money to made, so marketers jumped on the bandwagon. My concern with a nuclear blast would be more about fallout and the fading of out genes (not jeans) for future generations, rather than objects that can actually be fixed.

Y2k was a potential issue, but way overblown. If buddists were using old unpatched COBOL programs with 2 digit year dates in the code, they might have had issues. Might make for a pooched payroll run, but not planes falling out of the sky.

I was running a tech related business at the time, and had to "fire" a couple of customers whose hyper-zealous lawyers wanted me to sign an indemnity protecting their clients from issues anywhere in the known universe. The risk was low, but not zero, so no way I was signing such a thing.

Odd that nobody made a thing about seconds since the epoch exceeding the maximum value of a 32bit integer (unix time). Not as easy to get people worked up about I guess.

Those (if that is what they are) surge suppressors are terribly expensive. Our host has very nice Midnite's surge suppressors:

    https://www.solar-electric.com/marine-rv/circuit-protection/surge-protection.html

    For 1/5th the price.

Lots of test results and support documentation here:

    http://www.midnitesolar.com/productPhoto.php?product_ID=283&productCatName=Surge Protection Devices&productCat_ID=23&sortOrder=1&act=p

While, for off grid (and on grid) folks, EMP is problem, being in the middle of a nuclear war--You probably have other things to worry about too.

However, surge suppressors are very helpful for lightning prone areas.

Probably a hot item in the SHTF / Prepper circles.  I was curious as to whether it would be an effective lightning surge suppressor. Sounds like that's all it is. I'll stick with Midnite Solar

2.1 Kw Suntech 175 mono, Classic 200, Trace SW 4024 ( 15 years old  but brand new out of sealed factory box Jan. 2015), Bogart Tri-metric,  460 Ah. 24 volt LiFePo4 battery bank. Plenty of Baja Sea of Cortez sunshine.

It is designed to be much faster response than a lightning or surge protector which it is not designed for. If you have time to read it Bill I would appreciate your input.

The different pages take about an hour or so to read.

The one time use EMP used on some some of the spy sats I saw was a very formidable device. The Mil Spec this is tested for was similar I think. Been alot of years. In our small town up here in the Sierra, Wiley labs did the testing on several of those devices.

It would be nice to get this over to Midnite and get their comments. I think I have used over 500 of their SPD's and while many people could care less about surviving in this dismal situation, I know there are many who plan on it, like the Mormon church for instance. I am not a Mormon but they are the most prepared for many bad things. The links are pretty good and these folks have been around for quite some time.

Till they carry a UL cert, I'm not interested. I've seen many TSV;s go bad, most often open, but sometime shorted.
It really makes for a tough design to keep launch weight down, and protect against EMP & cosmic rays too, and have the circuits self-recover reliably.

Interesting....I was just trying to visualize an aluminum "cover" for my Outback inverter and C/C. Since it is mounted on a large steel plate, It shouldn't be overly difficult for Outback to have a "cover" available. The challenge is the wires coming and going. Plus a super fast "lightning arrestor" to well.....arrest rogue currents. Plus I think the fit has to be very good. My cell phone has still received calls while in the fridge and the microwave.

As for preppers? Well....I am one of those rascals and must say that some other preppers are some of the rascaliest of rascals. Though I strongly suspect that Ingsoc Thought Cops are highly attracted to what preppers may be thinking and talking about. Why would anybody prep when the government is so respected and responsible I might ask? When the world is so stable?

Knowing what I know about prepping, I tend to discourage people from taking it up. However.....if one is in the country and already has a good start, one can make a case for persevering. I figure most city folks should likely plan on just kissing their ass goodbye if the SHTF. They may take solace in their bug out bags and, sometimes, knowledge of an "unused cabin". I just don't think that a couple days in a tent is going to see them through a real SHTF scenario. Sorry 'bout that.

Farmers and ranchers? Many of them would likely do fine. Planning on selling my guns and buying 1-2 cows. This is free range country...that can help. I don't want to be in the woods looking for a deer after the SHTF. The biggest threat would be people, especially the government by my estimation. They could not resist deploying their toys.

I guess if you are far enough from people, you and your cows might be fine. But if you are near hungry and desperate people neither you nor your cows will be safe.

I don't know much about EMP protection. I believed that the best solution would be to have a backup solar system tucked away in a sealed steel box.

I've seen a few engines that had every wire hidden inside sealed and grounded metal shielding. Easier on equipment that doesn't have sensors everywhere.

Reasonable points....my current feeling is that a mediocre emp may well be worth dealing with the aftermath. In the event of a truly colossal emp that requires the sealing in addition to the steel box? I'm not convinced that I want to deal with the aftermath to a tragedy of that proportion. So much death and disease and pestilence.

Three of the greatest challenges to prepping:
    1) Relatively short lifespan of so many necessary items such as food and medicine.
    2) Almost everything costs money and it all adds up quickly and never seems to end.
    3) We don't know what to prepare for? Floods? Volcanoes? Earthquakes? EMP/solar flare? Martial Law? Economic turmoil? Nuclear Winter? Viruses/Plague? Civil Unrest/Civil War? Wildfires? Global Warming/Cooling? Socialism/Marxism(always fails)? WWIII? Muslim Takeover/Sharia Law? SWAT Raids? Drones? Cannibalism?

If we could just go to WalMart and buy a good prepper kit for $299? Sure.....couldn't lose more than $299. The reality is that it costs tens of thousands of dollars that is somewhat unlikely to truly pan out. For example, an underground structure may not hold up to floods, volcanoes, or earthquakes....or a large enough EMP for that matter.

Plus the "tax man" may look at your possessions and decide to make himself a "partner" via grotesque taxation.

Volcanic nuclear winter zombie apocalypse flood/drought with emp.

On a more serious note at bunch of guys in Conroe TX built a half or 1/3 size version teslas death ray. It was made to put out 100Mw for 1 micro second.
The drones they tested it with had gopro cameras on them to try and record the hit.
The cameras all survived, drones not so much.
You know the camera had to been hit with a pretty good emp.
I have said that shielded small portable electronic gadgets not power grid or hard wire connected would likely survive all but the very worst of a thremo nuclear high altitude emp.

Solar hybrid gasoline generator, 7kw gas, 180 watts of solar, Morningstar 15 amp MPPT, group 31 AGM, 900 watt kisae inverter.
