ALL MUST READ FIRST.
i have decided that a little sticky placed here with the many pics and movies some of you have come up with would be worthwhile for many to see and i decided this to be mostly for the newbies as most everybody else has their own or is more familiar with it. it should be good reading for all and they say a picture is worth a thousand words. this is not intended to allow for solicitations (without prior approvals) or advertisements for any commercial entity, that is other than our own forum sponsor. no spamming please. if you are in doubt then please ask us.
i am taking the liberty of putting roderick's here and i encourage others to put their pics or links to their own sites to see the pics provided it's not a commercial link.
thanks,
niel

Why can we promote images across the NAWS forum ?
Dont hit me 2 hard -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
you can if it's not a spam type thing, naked iguanas, or competes with naws. in case you don't know, pics are images and your shed can be put in here. what you are promoting is solar itself from your own accomplishments with it, so please do post your images. can i hit you anyway?:D:p -

Hello all,
I'm selling my solar powered cabin and the 20 acres it resides on in northeastern Arizona. Check out the details on my blog site at:
http://offgridaz.blogspot.com/
The link to the realtor is also listed there. It's been a great way to learn about solar and living off grid. Property prices are down and this is a great time to buy. I paid 70K and am listing it for 60K. Have a look and feel free to email me if you want more info.
Thanks,
Tim -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
Just a quick note to let you know that I reduced the price to $50,000. Not a bad deal for 20 acres and a cozy little cabin. Though off grid and private, your 6 miles from I-40 and 10 miles from Ashfork, about 30 from Williams, and about 50 from Flagstaff and Prescott. Cell phone reception is excellent (I use Verizon). Visit my website for all the details and contact information to my realtor. Thanks! -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
I finally got some pictures up of my little camper project: http://www.dekatodesigns.net/camper/camperConstructionPhotos.html
I had an emergency with one kitten so spent the solar system money. I will not need the power until it gets hot in spring so should be ok. I have a light run off of the truck battery. I can add the exhaust fan to that system so I can use the camp stove safely.
This is taking a bit longer than I expected. I don't believe in "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" any more
I found that the water bottle that I was going to use in the 'water heater' stops flowing after a little bit - vapor lock - so I am getting a collapsable water bottle instead. Best I could find is 3 liter instead of 4. Most are two or three gallons which would be too big & too heavy.
I ended up putting in a little skylight. If it adds too much heat, I'll put a piece of insulation under it.
I got some interior shutters that I can cut down for the windows. About $50 for one large enough to use for the two side windows.
Looks like I have the rest of 2008 at least to complete the camper. I'm having a great time building this. It's a great diversion.
Finally using some of the tools I've accumulated over the years: router, rotary cutter, dremel, skil saw, table saw. I've saved up a couple of shop vacs full of cedar sawdust to keep bugs away (put under the plywood in the bed of the truck).
I really appreciate all the help you folks provided. -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
looking good so far. good job. what will you put onto the wood to protect it from the elements? -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
I've got some Penofin penatrating oil wood finish in Mendocino Gray (the truck interior is gray) for the siding and probably the wood inside and Rustoleum Protective Enamel in gray for the trim. The roof is painted with 3 (maybe 4 ) coats of Protective Enamel in gloss white for the solar panel. I put DAP Butyl-Flex flashing adhesive over the screws and around any holes, etc. on the roof. I found a little elbow for drip watering that will work at the roof end of the battery vent so that it is vented towards the rear. I'll put a screen in that. I also found a pvc curve that will work to protect the cable coming out of the roof for the solar panel. I may add a couple of bumpers in front of the panel so they get hit first - hate to take a panel off going thru some fast food drivethru. -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
Finally put some more photos up
http://www.dekatodesigns.net/camper/camperConstructionPhotos.php
I read somewhere on this forum that they got better output when there was snow so I made the roof look like snow
http://www.dekatodesigns.net/camper/photos/pict0878.png
Probably good that the camper is tall enough that the top is not very visable. -

I'd like to put a couple up but maybe we should limit JPEG size? New thread with size standard?

Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
quick comment on the first video. you don't need to tie the 2 sides in the same pv together as they are tested to have and be a solid ground for the entire pv. the small tie linking the 2 pvs' grounds together i do agree with.
i only watched the first one so far and if i remember i'll watch the rest of them later on.
2 more comments- 1> if that is the thin al angle that it can still flex and break over time. 2> if you haven't done so as i couldn't fully tell, use stainless locking washers if you can to help prevent the nuts from unscrewing. -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
This is the system I had installed at the end of March 2009. It is 14 Evergreen ES-A-205 panels with a PV Powered PVP-3000 grid-tied inverter. The panels are on a detached garage (there are a couple of threads in this forum that were helpful to me).
I'm a lurker here, but I have learned a lot. Thanks to all of the regular posters that give their time to help others. -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
looks nice. how much spacing between the roofing and pvs did you leave as it is tough to judge that visually? -

It's about 6 inches. I didn't do the install myself because the city wouldn't let me due to the electrical. -

Good blog Ken, I like the way you expanded. The only thing that kills me on going solar is how long it takes to see a return on the investment. How ever I think people my not be factoring in the fact that one day oil prices could really skyrocket.
But anyway nice set up Ken!!! -

Hi everyone

I've just added a 300w wind turbine to that - http://enviergy.com/?p=256

Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
hi bob and welcome. i have 2 things to point out. the first is you need the turbine to fold down to transport or you will have unnecessary resistance to travel down the road making you use more petrol. and for the 2nd point is that the pvs and wind turbine are close enough to each other that shading may be a problem at some times. -

Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
Someone asked me once about putting a wind turbine on their RV. They wondered if it could handle the wind load while driving down the highway.
I said, "Um...why would you want to do that? Your RV already has a perfectly nice alternator..."
He said, "Uh...hmmm...OH! I get it!" -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
It's great that I ran into this thread, as I too created full video on how to build a solar panel based off my experience.
You can check it out at: http://www.solartechtown.com
The video player is one of the first things you see, so I tried to make the blog easy to navigate through, and very resourceful.
I'll definitely have to add a link to this forum pretty soon.
So I hope some of you new individuals to solar energy/panels find it useful or at least a resource that will give you some insight about building a DIY solar panel. I must warn that the video is VERY LONG (13 videos total) mostly because I showed practically "everything" I did to build it.

wouldn't mind having one of these as a backup genny -
Re: Pics, Movies, or links for personnal sites and blogs (no commercial)
I just started a website to document all of the upgrades I have made on my house to move towards off grid living. I have learned a lot along the way so you might as well learn from my mistakes. Some of the projects I have posted so far are my solar water heating system, solar air heater and high efficiency refrigerator modification. I like to do as much as possible myself so most things are pretty low tech but still very functional.
