The bottom line to me is that government has to be funded - whatever that means. It used to be that the road to your home and the neighbors used to be maintained by a group of these neighbors who would get together once or twice a year for maintenance or repair. If some jerk went out spinning cookies and throwing rock off the road were caught it was probably not a pleasant memory for the offender. The school was in one room for K-12 just up the road and the teacher was like a family member.

In some places as recent as year 2000 this could still be true. But we are evolving to be better by archiving these self reliant silly things and paying out-of-pocket to be better cared for.

To me, it is incredibly unbelievable, but I live in the cheap seats and I'm OK with that!

When I bailed out from CA and moved to TX in 2008, the lack of personal income tax here far out weighed the higher property taxes. At the time, I was $800./per month ahead with the higher property taxes vs. zero personal income tax in TX. I was happy to pay the higher property tax rate. The overall cost of living was also lower.
Around 2012 or 2013, property values in popular parts of Texas started climbing at historic rates. Now property values are skyrocketing so much that the spread has reduced and then vanished. We sold our really cool home in the woods specifically because of that. In 2018 I was coming up on 65 and did not want to freeze the taxes at $12,000. per year.
If I were leaving CA with that wad of equity, I am not sure where I would want to move. I do love many aspects of Texas and I am not in a hurry to leave.

:D "Nice that we all are now unburdened by what has been."

Now let's see if there is enough intestinal fortitude to make the hard decisions. When you find yourself in hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.
