Neither.  The grid is the way to go.  Regarding your budget, don't forget that both of those inverters are incomplete without their controls, shunts, battery monitors etc.   Many folks buy an inverter and it ruins their batteries because they are using the default inverter settings.   They may be upset when they find out how expensive it is to buy the controls for these inverters.

It is actually a good thing that Outback and Magnum do not include the controls with their inverters... these inverters can be stacked (multiple inverters synchronized to make a larger system).  If you were stacking four inverters, you wouldn't want to buy four sets of built-in controls.

Regarding the Magnum vs the Outback, either is a good choice... if your generator has a 240 volt output, or if you need 240 volts in your house, the Magnum would be a better choice (but an Outback with a transformer would work just as well).

By the way, give some thought to buying an inverter that has gen support (neither of the inverters you mentioned does gen support).

Do you mean that it is a 15 Kilometer distance away, or  $15,000 money away ?   For me, $15K would barely pay the electric company to install 2 of the 15 poles they insisted I buy.

Are you limited to 24v.based on existing battery bank? could be a perfect time to go to 48v.

What does that washing machine draw? 600W seems a bit small.

Our samsung washer & dryer, only pull about 300w ea. (front load, 2010 model)  the washer does make the inverter groan a bit as it's always changing speed and reversing.

Mike's 6000 watt inverter groans under the startup surge from a washer that draws 300 watts.  His post was not as explicit as it could have been... let me spell it out: a 600 watt inverter will not power your laundry.

Washing machines: depends on the motor in the thing. Direct drive motors will start and run on 1000W inverter. Ordirnary motors with belts and clutches will not.

Just to revisit went with a fl Samsung wf5200 steam and a samlex PST 1500 works great even if the freezer to fridge kicks on during wash could have used a 1000 watt inverter but wanted to hard wire plug for washer

I have a Magnum 2812 and have been very happy with it. It is a great unit. I would imagine that the magnum 4024 will do GREAT!. But, remember that you need to budget for the controller. Also Magnum do have Gen support. When i get my house done i will be getting the Magnum 4348.
