Need recommendation of crimper

I will be starting my project in the next month or so. I am in "acquisition mode" at the moment. I have some new 4/0 welding wire left over from work which is good because nothing beats free. I will be using it for my battery bank and inverter. I am considering one of the these two crimpers. Anyone with experience strongly for or against either of these?

Thanks for any advice you may have.

If there is someone who makes hydraulic hoses close to you the setup they have to crimp the ferules does a great job. -
Re: Need recommendation of crimper
I usead a crimper similar to your second option on 4/0 wires as well as on smaller #6 and #3 wires. It worked well for me. -
Re: Need recommendation of crimper
While the sledge hammer crimper seems to work, it does not create a gas-tight bond. The hydraulic crimpers can actually fuse the wire to the ferrule.
This is the one I used

Work with wire size 12 AWG to 2/0 AWG
They also have a 16 ton version too: $125

If you just need a couple, a battery shop can do them, and our forum's host also sells pre-made in varied sizes.Powerfab top of pole PV mount | Listeroid 6/1 w/st5 gen head | XW6048 inverter/chgr | Iota 48V/15A charger | Morningstar 60A MPPT | 48V, 800A NiFe Battery (in series)| 15, Evergreen 205w "12V" PV array on pole | Midnight ePanel | Grundfos 10 SO5-9 with 3 wire Franklin Electric motor (1/2hp 240V 1ph ) on a timer for 3 hr noontime run - Runs off PV ||

Re: Need recommendation of crimper
How about using the hammer type crimper in a hydraulic press ?
Will 12 tons do it ? -
Re: Need recommendation of crimper
I had some 'EBay Bucks' I was about to loose, and purchased the 2nd hammer crimper, I've only used it on 1/0 wire #2 wire so far but it appears to make a very nice bond. The 1/0 was multi strand, thin gauge wire and I pulled on it pretty hard and it appear to make a tight connection. I only used a 20oz hammer.Home system 4000 watt (Evergreen) array standing, with 2 Midnite Classic Lites, Midnite E-panel, Magnum MS4024, Prosine 1800(now backup) and Exeltech 1100(former backup...lol), 660 ah 24v Forklift battery(now 10 years old). Off grid for 20 years (if I include 8 months on a bicycle).
- Assorted other systems, pieces and to many panels in the closet to not do more projects. -
