if you were buying a controller like the Flexmate but didnt want to buy Outback.. what would you buy??
for 12,24,48 volt...

    The chief question would be: why not the Outback? Without knowing that, any recommendation may just duplicate the OB's characteristic.
    Assuming the issue is price, you could consider a PWM or MPPt from Morningstar:

    Good units recommended by their users (I'm not one so I can't speak from experience here - yet).

    Only OB has an 80 Amp model, as far as I know.

    Outback was purchased by Alpha Technologies. That's probably what the OP was referring to.
