24 volt DC sump pump

Hello all.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for this?

I want to run this pump off of a 24 volt battery bank only.

There is no Grid power so using an adaptor is not an option. Also, I don't want to use an inverter. I want to get the power directly off the batteries.

Thanks.

Rick

What are you pumping? Is if fairly clean or can you make it fairly clean?

How much capacity do you need? GPM or GPH?

My first thought is that the small surflo's would would work, even the more expensive submersible.

On the other hand, I think there is a company that makes a small cheap submersible (I think it is called "the little pump"). ~$100usd. They make at least two models, the Congo and the Amazon. You would need to build a good screen, and a float switch, but if you only want to move water now and again, and you can count on replacing it every once in a while.

I found this link with a quick search: http://www.slesolar.com/items/item1511.htm This is a 12vc model, but I'm sure they make a 24vdc one as well. They are used for test well monitoring especially.

PS Where in the T-Bay area are you?

You may find something in a boat supply shop, as a bilge pump. I don't know if they will have enough lift for your needs. Plenty in 12V, less in 24V.

    Hello Icarus.

The water would be fairly clean. Rain water mostly. I would want to pump aprox. 20 to 40 GPM.

I'm from Thunder Bay. Nice and cold here today. Going down to -30 tonight.

Mike has a great suggestion. "Rule" makes a bilge pump with a built in low water stopping system (electronic). I know they make a 12vdc and I've used it for a grey water pump for years. (I don't know why I didn't think of it first!)

Were 120 kms west of you. (Truth be told, I on the coast for a couple more weeks, 15c and bright sun!) I noticed in another post you mentioned your local honda dealer. Thats not J&J is it, or Lightning? Neither of those places has any one that knows squat about generators except to sell them!

2, 12V pumps wired in series, should move a fair amount of water. There are some 24V marine bilge pumps too

I could only find 12 volt. The set up has to be automatic so it looks like this is the way I'll go.

Tony - I've dealt with J and J sports here. I'm sure they know what they're doing here but I agree with you 100% when it comes to Generators etc for Solar etc. I still think the whole Idea of off grid or grid tie is out of their realm.

    Anyway, thanks for everyones help.

    Greatly appreciated -again.

Re: 24 volt DC sump pump

    Rick,

I had a time with J&J (Or perhaps lighting I can't remember). My neighbor had a Mitsubishi generator that would burn up it's voltage control about once a year. Each time, they said, "Yep, it's the control board, $400 please." After 3 times, my neighbor sold me the generator for $50 because he was so frustrated with it. I finally got ahold of Mitsubishi and they diagnosed the problem as a ground loop in the PV array, shorting out the DC side of the genset. (Something someone should have thought of after the first board, or perhaps the second) Mistusbishi did send me a new board after I reamed them about their dealers lack of understanding about the problem. I've found that T-Bay merchants aren't long on customer service. They seem to think that they are the only game in town. Now with the web we have choices than god.

I can get outboard and skidoo parts to my mailbox in Atikokan in less than a week. (often cheaper) I've often waited for months for "special order" parts to come through a dealer. I like to support my local business but,,,,

Try this Google search string for general info: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22sump+pump%22+24V&btnG=Search

And, here's a specific link to 24V sump pumps: http://www.stevenspump.com/sump-pumps.asp
