Takes a bit of getting used to but it works just as well. Since the background is maybe 80-95% of the page - this is a pretty significant energy saver.
Plus I read that Google took over Opera and Google pretty went full evil over the past few years. Remember that "Don't be evil" slogan? I also recommend DuckDuckGo for real, unfiltered search results.

How much energy you save is not "simple".... Most older laptops/older TVs/older cell phones/etc. use a backlight screen with "LCD Shutter" (backlight is always on, LCD overlay blocks light or lets through, RGB filters). In this case, LCD type displays will probably not save much energy (if any) by going to a dark theme.
Newer cell phones (computers, TVs, etc.) use OLED or similar tech. In this case, each pixel is an LED that is "on or off". So, going to a dark theme screen, yes you save energy. (like the old Plasma TVs, each pixel was a "light source").
Otherwise, just backing down on the overall screen brightness saves energy too... Whether backlit or OLED.
And a bit more background, our eyes are "logarithmic" with regards to light (and our ears too). More or less, a 2x or less factor in change of light energy, our eyes barely perceive it. A 10x change in intensity, is a "night vs day" change (the 10x brighter will "swamp" the dimmer source).
So even just reducing backlighting a small amount (just barely a perceptible reduction in energy), can save 1/2 of the display energy usage for LCD or OLED pretty easily.

Well that is interesting information indeed. This is a 2018 Acer Windows 10 - I have no idea if this saves energy now.
