inverter/charger

i have a 2600 watt wind turbine on order and have a question about inverters.i am interested in an off grid setup. i know that i can set the voltage on the inverter to run off of the batteries when the batteries are at a certian voltage, and adjust the voltage setpoint when it gets to low and switches back to the utilitiy. but what i am not sure of is when the inverter switches back to the utility, does the inverter charge the batteries from the grid or from the turbine?

Unless the inverter also has a charger built in, it is only an inverter. Your owners manual will tell you what it's capabilities are.
Wind generators sometimes need their own dedicated charge controller, as it may be part of their over-speed governor.

if it does have a charger built into it it is for the grid to charge the batteries. there is no need if you are off grid unless you can use a generator to feed the charger. in cases like that the generator may need to be held within a small tolerance for frequency and voltage so be carefull that isn't going to be the case.
