Im tryna change the charge settings to a custom setup on a MPPT-60 connected with an ethernet cable...
I'm getting and error that reads...
Unable to connect to Tristar MPPT Unable to open modbus rcp/ip 192.168.1.253:502
Anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? Basically I can't get the laptop and controller to connect to each other..

Have you looked at any of these videos? The first one looks like it might have what you are trying to do.

walp.. crossover cable didnt work... went back to a regular ethernet cable connected to a wireless router... that allowed me to bring up msview in a browser... then after many shenanegans I got my custom settings uploaded

I only monitor with ethernet. I use RS232 to program it with MSView

Without a router there will not be a DHCP server in the network to supply IP addresses and network information to the two devices.
Either you did not manually configure the IPs or you did it incorrectly so that there was no apparent path between the two devices.
The most common IP configurations using that particular private address space use 192.168.0.xxx instead of 192.168.1.xxx and sometimes configure the network mask for 255.255.255.0 (/24) instead of 255.255.0.0 (/16).
