Try as much as humanly possible to get them high enough so that there is as little danger of water coming over the top. The idea of murky flood water in the cells is bad. I would think the impurities in the water could be enough to kill them. Barring that cap them as best you can and hope for the best.
Water up the side of the cases shouldn't hurt them any, but water in the caps might.

Hello Guys,
In a few yachts I maintain, they place domestic battery banks ( sealed lead acid type ) under the saloon floor which is the boat interior. They house the batteries in a fiberglass box and attached a 4" air hose which leads to the boat exterior thru a ventilator grille. Since a boat moves around, the ventilator grille can produce suctions because of wind velocity. So far so good and the yacht alternators are 24 volts 120 amps x 2 ( twin engines ) charging thru a combiner/splitter controller. Batteries are usually 4 of 12 volts 200 amps.
If the box containing the batteries can be made air tight on its sealing surface, using two of 4" in air hoses, one for air in and one for air out while the outgoing uses a fan which is ignition proof, I think it should be save enough for batteries in a house. LPG or propane gas tank in the kitchen can explode too right, yet we still put them within a kitchen area ?
There are many 4" blowers in marine shop which are ignition protected for use in boats with gasoline inboard engines.

I have mine on a battery rack near the foot of my bed. I like the little "Gurgle" sounds that they make every now and then..
My charge controller is right there too so I can keep an eye on what's going on..

Looks like something blew up the 2 center cells. What's the history of it ? I've seen batteries in EV's with terminals melted off, but no cell explosions. The local battery shop just casts a new terminal back onto the battery and it's good to go. Looks like a real great place for that charger, or inverter - whatever it was - inside a box beside a battery spewing acid fumes.
By the way, I had a battery in my car do the same thing a few years back. Turned out that one of the internal connector bars from one cell to the next broke off, or was eaten away enough to go open circuit and cause an internal spark at the same time. It happened when I went to start the car one morning. I heard the bang under the hood, checked it out and saw what you have.
