I had a 10KW 1800 rpm diesel by Winco with a 4cyl Kubota engine in my RV. burned about 1/2 gal at medium load and always ran. Great piece of machinery, but not cheap!

    Hey Oil Pan:
Just stumbled across this one http://www.generatorsales.com/order/09912.asp?page=L09912
I want...if only because it looks like an awesome way to lose an arm!

Nah. I grew up starting and running engines like that (exposed, open flywheel, crank or arm-pull start). Still have both my arms. :D

Still got both arms, and just cranked it up today. The cheap welds on the fuel tank straps started coming loose today. So I'm down till I install a shelf and relocate the fuel tank.
But it's a nice engine and is just so neat-o.

Ahhh never mind on the lister engine...the Mrs cast her veto vote...she probably has to fire up the genset 50% of the time. She took one look at it and said NO!
But come on...how cool is that thing!? Even I could fix that!

    To Cariboo and Mike:

How hard were/are they to keep running?
    Get started?
Are they a daily maintenance kind of thing? I'd have to put it in a heated structure...which poses a whole different set of issues.

    But it is well cool.

Repair depot is open today...complete with a 3hr round trip drive...hoping it's just a loose bolt on the head or maybe a gasket...wish me luck!

If it ran in cold weather and the breather tube froze, which caused one of the crank seals to fail. Or clogged spark arrestors ,causing the engine to burn oil , first tell tail ,, creating so much back pressure that the crank case was being pressurized and forcing oil past the seals . If it is on Syn oil , I use MIL spec 5-30 for winter , 5-40 summer , But Im on the wet coast. Up north 0w 20 Mil spec for some of the smaller units .

Just my thoughts on your leaker

I know Honda has some 10 Watt heated breather tube kits (about $70-$100 USD):

Could not find any Yamaha kits with a quick search.

Yeesh! aren't you full of sunshine?! I much prefer my "loose bolt on the head cover" theory.

But you could be on the right track...though it started in late summer.

Down to 35F, it starts on the first compression stroke. Below 35, it will start on the 2nd compression. These are "cold start" diesels, with a bit higher
than normal compression. Avoids needing a high tech aid like glow plug or propane torch preheat. I use 5-30 oil, because the "recommended" 30w is too thick to hand crank through.
Maintenance is just the stupid stuff, like the welded bolt on the fuel tank strap, breaking off. cheap hardware store mounting bolts breaking, got to get grade 5 - but not grade 8 (too brittle and will break too!). And be sure the diesel is winterized and de-watered.

    Mike:

    MAN!...I want one.
How do I hide it so the Mrs doesn't see it?
Think I could claim it's a bird feeder?

Well, I ordered up a honda 3000 today...so now I am just like every other genny owner...I will have all my arms and no reason to wear overalls and grow a handlebar moustache or nothing cool!
Life can be so disappointing some days.

    lol.

    Thanks everyone...
