Battery question, off-topic but hoping for help

This really isn't a Solar PV question, or even about a gigantic 600ah battery, but I'm hoping for a bit of help from those who know about batteries.

If you bought a regular 12V AGM 30ah battery, and upon initial installation found it to read 10.3, would you insist on a replacement battery? Or would you, as was suggested, try to charge it and see if it will be OK? Is my suspicion correct, that even if it now can be restored to working condition with a recharge, the lifespan of this battery has been decreased? If it has been decreased, is there any guess about how much it has been shortened?

Just my opinion, but if I bought a brand new battery of any type and found that on the Voltage reading it was dead as a doornail I'd take it back. 10.3 is so far off proper Voltage I can't believe it would be any good. It's up to the seller to provide you with something that meets specs to begin with; not for you to mess about trying to resurrect the dead. (No religious comments now.)

10.3 v is dead. Any way to verify that the meter is correct? Sounds like one cell (2V) in the battery is shorted. Refund time.

I would not pay good money for a dead battery. I wouldn't even pay $5.00 for a dead battery, and at 10.3 volts, it is dead. But that's me. I wouldn't pay for a dead light bulb either. I'm strange that way. Hahahaha
And I'd put some secret mark on the battery, so if they take it back, you'll know if they try to shove it off on you as a "replacement" that they managed to somehow nurse back to 12 volts.
