Size of batteries

We're planning on getting a 3.7 kw system (possibly 5 kw, but not sure yet), with battery back-up. We're a little confused about whether to go with 12, 24 or 48 volt batteries. What would people say is the best way to go here?

For that much power you should go with 48v battery system.

For a GT system with battery back-up you might consider the Xantrex XW. There your choice would be either the 4548 http://www.solar-electric.com/xaxw12hyin.html with at least 400 Amp hours of battery or the 6048 http://www.solar-electric.com/xaxwhyin1.html with at least 600 Amp hours of battery. This is about the easiest way to achieve GT & battery back-up.

Outback has just introduced a new 8kW inverter, the Radian http://www.solar-electric.com/ourags8wain.html , but that might be too large and expensive for your needs.

Another option is to use dedicated GT inverters for most of the system, with a smaller battery-based unit for minimal back-up needs (saves on the size of battery bank, et cetera).
