Do you think it's possible to buy the components and hire an electrician to hook up batteries, etc. without going through a regular installer?

Don't be surprised if the electrician is not at all familiar with any of it. In general they work in a different area of electrical and have little or no contact, or experience with off grid. All of which can lead to grief for you. -

installing the actual panels on the ground or on the roof yourself is pretty straight forward DIY kind of stuff.
