Morningstar issues??

Anyone have any troubles with load diversion and the Tristar 60 on a 48 volt system?

3 Ohm resistor and wired properly with dip switches in the correct position.

The one time it needed to work, it fried somehow.

    Hmmm ? I thought you needed the relay driver to do that ?

    Is it the the Tristar 60A PWM or the MPPT ?

    Not sure what you mean? I do not know the answer. The manual does explain how to do diversion control. Not sure what relay you are talking about?

    I think Mike is asking, PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) or MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking), so he can better help.

    Basically, if you paid around $200 then it's PWM, if you paid around $550, it's a MPPT.

    If it's being used in diversion load, then it must be the PMW version. I don't know why it would fry. If the resistor dump load is 3 Ohms, then I=V/R would say that your current would be around 16A assuming 48V. Nowhere near the limited of that controller.

    Have you talked to Morningstar about this, and what did they say?

    Are you sure that the resistor load is 3 Ohms and that it's not drawing more current than 60A?

    It is PWM and I measured the Ohms with my meter. There is only a 30 amp breaker on this unit, so it is not drawing more than 60 amps. Morningstar says that it should work fine. That's why I am looking here to see if anyone else has had problems. Next step is to force it to start diverting and be there to measure and watch what is going on.

    I haven't heard of any problems like that. Might have been an isolated incident (defect) in that unit. Did Morningstar warranty it?

    Sounds like a good idea to cause it to divert and be there to observe what happens.
