A friend has been offered these batterys 2nd hand 5years old.from a ups .very cheep.Are they suitable for off grid system?

    5 years is typically a long life for AGM's installed in a UPS system.

    Although, according to their specifications (PDF), they have a 10 year life if operated at 20C/68F. If the batteries have been in a warm room/hot equipment, at 30C they only have a 5 year life.

    For AGM's, a typical failure is corrosion of the catalyst required to recombine the Hydrogen and Oxygen. Once the catalyst is gone, the batteries vent and the electrolyte dries out. Replacing the catalyst does not appear to be cheap (typically something like platinum or similar expensive metal).

    Compare the price you can purchase the batteries for and how much it will cost (or how much you may get from recycling) for them. The batteries do not appear to have Cadmium or other materials that makes recycling expensive--but check to be sure.

    If the price and transportation costs are cheap--It may be worth at least trying them. If they last you a few years, you should be happy.

    buying 2nd hand batteries is a risk and you may get stuck paying to dispose of them if they fail so i would not offer much for those 5yr old batteries that may be at the end of their expected life.

    5 year old UPS batteries are about dead. I suspect they won't last long when you start to cycle them. UPS batteries are only spec'd for a couple of cycles, not daily cycles.
