Water Purification

As one of my steps to conservation I want to buy a counter top water purification system I'm looking at spending about 100$ and recommendations from folks that have or had one. My main concern is chemical removal not organic substance I'm on city water.

This will not only save me a buck on bottled water but now that Ive seen the numbers on the damage bottled water and the caps used in bottled water have it will have much lower impact on nature as well.

    My advice is to skip the "pitcher" type and go for n in-line unit. Rainfresh makes a good line:

    So do other companies; basically the same units with 'styling' differences.

    Since your concern is chemical not organic, you'd be looking at one of the charcoal type. They're quite reasonable in price. I've got a whole-house charcoal filter waiting to be installed here; haven't got around to it yet. Too much to do! There is a reverse-osmosis drinking water tap here too; costly, but very clean.

    If organic compounds were the concern you'd be better off with the ceramic filter. I've got one of these on my cabin drinking water which comes from the lake. After filtering it's as clean as any water you can buy in the store.

    I've used the pitcher-type in the past. Over-all they're cumbersome, messy, and expensive.

    Just my two cents. Canadian so not as valuable as US $, eh? :p

    I personally own and like the "multipure" brand , carbon filter. Slow flow rate, large canister , countertop or under sink install.

    I have used the PUR for years. It is cheap and, as far as I know, effective.

    I am on mains water here in Spain, It is drinkable but has go a lot of cal & minerals in it, so most people use bottled for drinking +tea & coffee, I have a similar reverse osmosis unit to this ( random link, no recommendation for that particular unit or seller) 5 stage reverse osmosis filter

    I cannot recommend it highly enough ! Paid for itself in 3 months in water cost alone,
    We use 8 ish liters a day, used to be 1 big bottle @ €1.60 each let alone the going to get it and the resulting bulky plastic waste it created, now a little tap on the sink :D
    Maintainence is supposed to be filters every 6 months ish, May be cause my water is fairly clean, but mine are fine after 18 months (0 TDS, ph neutral)

    Install, It came with a T piece to go inline with sink tap for feed, one small hole in worktop for outlet tap, If you have a fridge with water chill/ice could also feed that, And a waste pipe,

    General comments, As I said, can`t recommend it highly enough, If I move house will be one of the first thing I install in new house, Well worth the €, Even if I had to replace the whole unit every 6 months, still be worth while, Kettle still looks new inside after 18 months,, So I think you get the idea I like it :D

    Bad points,
    You need about 4 bar + of pressure to run it, If not there are plenty with (DC by the look of it) pumps as part of the kit,
    I would recommend one with a pressure storage tank, RO is not fast,
    They waste about 2/3 of the water going through them, Depending on how "dirty" the input water is, The "waste" is going to be "dirtier" by the % of the clean you also take, Mine is not too bad TDS 18 ish, so it go`s to my garden irrigation system,
