    Hey boB
It is always a bittersweet decision on going to LA after being offgrid so long... So, sorry I won't be seeing you but something I worked on will! There is a smart grid conference up in San Jose that time period and that is something that really interests me. Good Luck with your babies!

OK then. I'm guessing that it's probably the high voltage controller.

Have a good time though !

    Re: Very nice news!

OK they announced it! I have wanted this tool in my box for a long time. I really thought with this nasty recession that this project would be cancelled.

Love them or not, it is a very nice piece of work. The state of the art commercially for this wide of conversion range. Thanks to all the folks involved in any of the new CC's that are coming out!

The Xantrex high voltage charge controller XW MPPT – 80 - 600

600 vdc 80 amp charge controller for 24VDC and 48VDC nominal battery systems.

24 months and up to 12 years of logs.

Negative, positive, or ungrounded with PV GFCI.

    Boost algorithm for battery maintenance.

Can power its own system control panel for those with another brand of inverter.

    ½ WATT loss at night.

    No relay sounds.

Variable speed fan that I never had come on all summer with a 1600-watt array.

Room for 3 strings and fuses but not listed for fuses internally. A lot of room though...

Xanbus enabled. Aux output for alarms etc.

Current limits at 23 amps on solar input. NEC compliance would require #10 AWG with 75C insulation.

MPPT range 195V to 600V with a shut down at 550V for protection. I saw efficiency in the mid 90's with a 24V nominal battery

500 foot + array to house distances with wire gages that are easy to work with & less expensive wire.

Conversion from a battery less inverter without having to go up on the roof to rewire.

Balance of system components and install times are reduced dramatically.

I was told availability in early 2011.

Complies with FCC class B devices.

    5 year warranty.

More like is it OK with Xantrex as in NDA would be my take

I'm guessing its similar in size to the GT seeing its 80 amps, just was curious

    Re: Very nice news!

It's as tall as the Xantrex inverter BOS box is on the side. Like, 2 1/2 or 3 feet ?

It might look a wee bit funny if not mounted to the X-Box though.

Maybe I will post a picture. BTW, there may be a bit of discrepancy on the low
end MPPT Voltage. I heard 240 Volts but would hope that it really is more like
    195V.

Yea post it ! I have not heard back. The pix I have is a shameless plug for my business. The thing with the 195V bottom of the tracking range is for a 24V nominal. The 48V nominal is not guaranteed to track max power until 240V is available.

A question, is your 250V CC's VOC a subtraction of the battery voltage? I was hoping to use one but ended up not being able to wait and had to use an Apollo 200v CC.

Why such a difference on MPPT range with 24 V vs. 48 V systems? I'm curious if anyone knows the technical reasons.

nope add the battery voltage to the operating voltage so a max voc off 250vdc + 48vdc = 298vdc

I know what you mean! Back in the 80's at HP we use to have alot of Cannon engineers from Japan taking pictures. For a short time there was "gate" that you had to walk thru that took care of the film problem.

    Re: Very nice news!

So, I've got a thought here, about using a high voltage string for battery charging in cloudy weather ?

with enough light, all PV's come up to .55V per cell, but current depends on the brightness.

I'm wondering, if on a cloudy day, more power can be harvested from a HV array, that downconvert the voltage, than a low voltage array, which has no amps ?

If so, I'm in for the HV charger !

i don't think the hv will do any better than the low voltage for as you said the voltage is there even on the lower voltage systems. often there is a drop in efficiency with wider input/output ratios so my bet is on the lower voltage system harvesting more power all be it small.

    Re: Very nice news!

Hard to say without an A vs. B test. That rarely happens in any double blind tests without parties that have financial interest. The charge algorithim is certainly pretty damn fast.

i think of these controllers as a way to have multiple arrays on hills with shading, in the mountains, where most of the people I deal with live. It gives them a way to run a long distance to non shaded areas during the low angle sun of winter. A tool in the tool box for a great inverter/ charger.
