can a 60 Hz motor run on 50 Hz power?

I have a 230 V, 1 Ph., 60 Hz submersible well pump and saw an Exeltech XP 1100 X-P-K 3-1-5-1 230 v 50 Hz up for auction and I started wondering if it would work and what the downside would be?? poor performance and a lot of heat and smoke? Can the inverter Hz be adjusted?

It would pump 10hz slower, and maybe run a little hotter? Your mileage may vary?

I guess you can make some assumptions...

V*50/60=0.83*rated voltage (need a step down transformer or if the pump allows you to rewire for different input voltages)

RPM=Rated RPM * 50/60=0.83 rated rpm (slower, less power)

Monitor Amps going into motor... Keep 50Hz Amperage at, or below, 60Hz rated amperage (motor may not cool as well at lower RPMs).

Obviously, the output/work will be 0.83x too...

Re: can a 60 Hz motor run on 50 Hz power?

    thanks guys.

the pump came out of a 90 foot deep well and is a 1/3 hp, delivering 60 psi max and 5 (US)gpm / min.

Volume and pressure are not too much of an issue as we only need to lift about 25 feet above lake level to a holding tank. gravity will be used for most domestic water other than the shower which will be pressurized eventually.
Plan is for a tank that will hold 3 days water supply so the pump will run only have to run steadily once every 2 to 3 days till the tank fills.
Garden will be a xero-sere type when it gets established and, believe me, we are in a near desert in the summer... ~ 90 F and sandy gravel soils with a southern aspect, so if we plant it it has to be tough...

    cheers
    Eric.

    Eric,

A pretty good alternative is to pump the water with the genny, maybe while you are doing bulk charging. If you are just pumping into 25' ~10psi, that pump might pump 5-8 gpm, so ~300 gph once or twice a week might come way cheaper than Pv power.

On the other hand, you may find it more fuel efficient to use a honda type pump, with 25' lift a 4 hp pump might pump 20+ gpm. We used to pump to our gravity tank that way before you 12 vdc submersible system.
