I am just wiring up my new system and find that Morningstar recommend putting the battery temp sensor on a terminal post which i had done on my first system and it seemed to work fine but on doing some research i find that Rolls Surette  do not recommend this saying that the sensor should go on the body of the battery as there can be a huge difference in temps, my charge controller is the Tristar MPPT 60 amp so which would be correct my original system batteries going on nearly six years still seem to get through the winter ok.
Thanks

    Either is probably fine...

One suggestion is to take a hunk of styrofoam, carve out a hole in one side, and place it over the temp sensor on the side of the battery (glue on, place second battery next to the block to hold it in place)... This gives you are more accurate reading that is not affected by air circulation.

Battery terminals are a poor choice for 2 reasons

    1) heavy copper wires can suck heat away from the post, gives a wrong reading
    2) large currents (amps) can cause resistance heating of the lead post interface to wire clamp, still a wrong reading
