I would want reserve at least one day possibly 2. January 2018 it was overcast 28 days so I  had to run the generator almost every day. No amount of solar or Batteries would make a difference.  Summers mostly it just rains in the afternoon. For no more than 1 or 2 days consecutive.

@Dave Angelini had it mostly right. Our cabin was wired for 110VAC when we built it 44+ years ago, but until 2017 we ran a generator when we needed power. The family made the decision to - at least for now - plan for no days of autonomy. So our battery bank was sized for no more than 50% DoD, but only for one day.  So far that has worked out fine, the only time we end up having to run the generator is if a larger number of people are there.  My wife and I and sometimes one of our two adult daughters can pretty easily get by without running the generator.

The cabin is mostly used only in the mid-spring to late-fall. Either my brother or my sister will probably go up in the next couple of weeks for the first time this year, and we usually close up the cabin for winter in November.

Also, the area where our cabin is gets a ton of cloudless days. In the summer we get periodic late afternoon thunderstorms, but it's not uncommon to go for a month or more with no rain at all. At 9,000 ft elevation, we get pretty high harvest from the panels.

As for what it is powering: Largest load is a 1/2 hp well pump, which runs for just under 3 minutes to fill the pressure tank. It may run 1-2 times for a shower, and maybe as many as 3-4 other times through the day. I budgeted 30 minutes of the pump running per day in that 3.3kWH.  We also allow for 30 minutes per day of some other larger load, like the microwave oven, blow dryer, or curling iron. Other than that the loads are relatively small: LED lights throughout the cabin, one ceiling fan, a cell phone booster, and plug-in chargers for phones and laptops.  The water heater, wall furnace, and refrigerator are all propane, run off what I think is a 500 gal tank that gets filled once per year.

As is said in countless threads here, the key is to carefully add up all the power for your loads (watts) as well as how long they will run (to give you the energy total, in watt hours).  Size your battery bank for that, accounting for DoD and days of autonomy, then build out the rest of the system allowing for the inefficiencies introduced by all the pieces.

Our parts list included 74 line items. It's funny, but at one point it looked like the system was going to cost around $6K, but all the little things really added up. $500 for concrete (ballast for our ground-mount), $300 for conduit and fittings, etc. I'm guessing I made 20 trips from our cabin to Home Depot, which was about a 3 hour round trip.

Forgot to ad in my location sept brings hurricanes almost yearly 3-4 days of rain.
I have 2 generators one for charging and 1 for ac. I'm in a tag along camper. With lp refrigerator but want to change it out for a 18
Cu ft (340 yearly consumption) water is county.  no well pump. I fill 2 300 gal water totes and pressure comes from 12 volt rv pump.
I will run everything on my kilowatt meter  for a month
Except refrigerator I don't have it yet.
Then it will be possible to size my system more accurately.

You may say that now and I will just say it may be true for you at this stage. You do not have to believe me that I (and others) have done far more challenging power systems in more challenging locations. It does cost alot more, but it is really not as hard as you think at this stage.
    I wish you good luck!

Seems that there are diy small systems such as mine.
    And then there's big systems
1kwh per day  cost me $1.15 per watt.
Im sure  going  to 48 volts and a 5kwh will be more than 5x the cost.
@mike95490 For a large system as yours what is the approximate cost per watt.

My batteries are NiFe with a price that seems like they are gold filled
I got my panels at close out prices.
1 pole mount is a surplus elevator shaft, other is 14" pipe.   Nothing standard about any of it.   The inverter is not produced anymore, I'd price a XW6848 as a replacement
    Powerfab top of pole PV mount | Listeroid 6/1 w/st5 gen head | XW6048 inverter/chgr | Iota 48V/15A charger | Morningstar 60A MPPT | 48V, 800A NiFe Battery (in series)| 15, Evergreen 205w "12V" PV array on pole | Midnight ePanel | Grundfos 10 SO5-9 with 3 wire Franklin Electric motor (1/2hp 240V 1ph ) on a timer for 3 hr noontime run - Runs off PV ||

Has anyone heard of a marathon refrigerator
18.3 ft frost free top freezer   Comes in 2 types inverter compressor $800 or standard compressor $700 Both claim 358 kwh yearly consumption.
Would a 1000 watt array 40 amp cc and 210 ah on 24 volts power just one of these?.
My understanding is a 1500 watt inverter would be needed for the regular compressor
But what wattage for the inverter compressor?
