Maybe do plug-in hybrids first?

I'm all for greening up air travel, but living under the flight path near a fair sized airport I hope these won't suddenly lose power like my drill does when the lithium battery gets low

People who write about battery powered 18 wheelers and airplanes must have gotten some really primo brownies during their Colorado excursion.
We mostly have gigantic battery banks that are lucky to power our frugal homesteads for two days.First Bank:16 180 watt Grape Solar with FM80 controller and 3648 Inverter....Fullriver 8D AGM solar batteries. Second Bank/MacGyver Special: 10 165(?) watt BP Solar with Renogy MPPT 40A controller/ and Xantrex C-35 PWM controller/ and Morningstar PWM controller...Cotek 24V PSW inverter....forklift and diesel locomotive batteries -
There actually is a battery powered commercial (converted Beaver or Otter IIRC) in service out of Vancouver

Freightliner has shipped it’s first edition of battery powered transport trucks.

Given that most energy sources are either directly or indirectly “subsidized” I don’t think pushing the envelope of energy technology is a bad thing. That said, I have no idea if Daimler (parent company to Freightliner) gets/got subsidies for this or not. The airplane cited is a one off and I would doubt there was/is much subsidy.
