    Sometime a motor has more torque than needed on startup.  In such cases, a soft-start device makes sense.   In other cases, the motor produces (with margins for low voltage, load, etc) the required amount of startup torque and reducing it risks motor failure.

    Inrush current is a different issue - I'm not aware of any downside to reducing it.

    Different manufacturers, but I have one on my house central air and also one installed in my camper roof AC. They work great.  The one on my central air gets the start amps within single inverter specs and the one on my camper allows me to run the AC on one eu2000 generator or on a regular 15 amp household plug rather than 30 amp.
