DIY plante battery

I recently purchased a book call the battery builders off amazon. It goes into great depth on how to build, repair and recondition lead acid batteries. It talks of the plante battery and how to form them but skips a lot on tubular battery construction. Has anyone ever built a plante cell? I'm told they can be flat or tubular. I was thinking of making one, seems ideal for off grid and long term battery life. I don't need energy density. I need long life. If i want more capacity i make bigger plates. If anyone has some information or experience chime in. Seems THE easiest battery to make. Material and mechanics of construction is dead simple, the only issue is forming, it was never a popular battery for manufacturers because of the long forming cycle, but i have time and lots of it, So its not a problem. What i do not have is the chemicals, tools and other things i would need to make pasted plates which would not last as long.

I have not read here of anyone that has worked on their batteries (taking apart cells). Best I can offer is a link to a 100 year old battery service manual. It may offer some missing details:
