    Re: Asking for help

for only 3 weeks a year, solar is a Expensive investment. you may want to consider a small generator and battery backup system, you can buy a generator for the price of 2 panels.

There is a long thread here
    http://forum.solar-electric.com/showthread.php?t=3144
that you should read, figure out some load numbers for your use, and then we will have something to work with.

    Small t.v. 12v with dish? 4hr day.

What system for off grid would i need?

    THANK'S

    lets see:

    4 pcs - 7w lights x 8hrs on: 220w
    notebook 35w x 4hrs: 140w
    tv: 60w x 4hr: 240w

TOTAL: 600wh per day for 2 days reserve (assumption) = 1200wh

1200wh are 100ah in 12V - so you'd need a 200ah battery bank, cos you dont want to go below 50% depth of charge.

to replenish the 50ah (daily consumption) you'd need about 150-200w "nameplate" worth of solar panels - if you can get 4 hrs of full sun - if not - you'd need 200+w

then you'd need a charge controller and an inverter and the batt's and the PVs.

so, doing the math - a gen is a better option, b/c managing a battery bank off-site is risky (they prob. cr@p out on you the next time you get up there ;)) and expensive

also you might want to consider the risk of PVs and stuff get stolen (a gen is way more stealth in a cabin far off)

probably not what you wanted to hear

    cheers
