Has anyone sunk their batteries part way in the ground to keep them cooler or warmer?

Yes, people have done it here (not me, I am Grid Tied) and the deeper you go, the more stable the temperatures.

Some issues--Drainage/flooding, ventilation, ability to get large cells/batteries into a "bunker", etc.

Remember that earth is a pretty good insulation--So if you have something generating heat--You may still need positive ventilation (or a large enough bunker) to dissipate the heat.

During summer the batts don't get warmer than 25C, even when ambient reaches 35C. In winter they can dip down to 10C when ambient is -5C.
