Got this http://www.solar-electric.com/motrrmredime.html second hand but when it arrived a small piece had broken off the board.

Looks like it was a weak solder joint on the board. Well okay, thought I was going to easily solder the capacitor back on the board.

Bending a leg of the component every so slightly to line up with the board broke the leg almost clean off. TO short for me to really do anything with.

I am looking to see if I can find a replacement with some longer legs any help would be greatly appreciated.

Attaching photos of the component which I believe is a capacitor. Anyone help finding a replacement. Looks like 25V but what is the 100 micro farad?

I would imagine the black strip on the capacitor would tell me which leg it negative?

Also attaching photo of the board, I built up area where it goes with solder. Upper left hand of picture.

Thanks for the help.

I am guessing it is this guy:

    C100U25ESMD - 100uF 25V SMD Electrolytic Capacitor
    Attachment not found.

    Some more information (another vendor):

I am trying to find the exact markings and what they mean--But you will probably have to search for those on your own.

If you find a leaded electrolytic cap with the right value and keep the leads short, it should be OK.

Soldering a surface mount device like this is tough. You should be using a heated air device. Hand soldering with an iron may be impossible (or not very reliable as you can stress the components).

PS: This is probably a bypass capacitor and the actual value is not critical (as long as you have the correct voltage and polarity and are somewhere in the region of the value or even on the higher value side).

I've seen caps with the black stripe indicating the + side. Really goofy, but that's how the datasheet calls some out. You will have to look this up to see what it is.
You can go higher in voltage, but the case size will get larger, and it may not fit well.

Also, some caps have specific frequency responses, try to use the exact part, not just "something close". Being the meter, it's likely not too critical. Maybe.

    thanks for the replies.

Went to Radio shack and picked up 2 capacitors. 100mf 35v. Soldered it up and it appears to work. This is for a future system so I wired the controller up to 24v 2 car batteries in series, and the remote display to the controller.

Everything powers up fine. Appears to work well. Will have to see when in full operation, but now have an extra capacitor if it does not last very long and can swap out and look for a better component.

    Thanks again.
Just posting to give closure to the thread. I hate reading about problems and get to the end of the thread and poster disappears. I know it is tempting once you have everything working. But horribly annoying.
