What is edge of cloud effect?

Last week there were many individual clouds in the sky at about noon and my controller was showing really high current being produced. I assume I was experiencing " Edge of Cloud Effect" that I have seen mentioned in some articles. Is this the case and exactly what is "Edge of Cloud Effect" ?
