If you feel the base is secure and the panels can be joined safely AND the additional hight won't leverage the lower panel off, its ok with me.  ( What state do you drive in ? )

  wire gauge is driven by the Amps it carries. Also by how much resistance (loss) your plan can tolerate. Voltage determines the thickness of the insulation on the wire.

  How do you power the Iota charger ? How many 12V batteries do you have in parallel I manage my battery bank primarily with solar, and generator only when the sun don't shine

   Midnight Solar sells switch rated DC breakers for 150V for about $20. Then you need to mount it to a flat panel with a slot and screw holes, it has bolt & nut terminals for Ring Lugs.
