If you feel the base is secure and the panels can be joined safely AND the additional hight won't leverage the lower panel off, its ok with me.  ( What state do you drive in ? )

  Rinse with water, then ammonia, then water again. After you can't smell any residue, you could try an acid rinse, and then where do you dump the acid ?

  attaching a BTS to a terminal post is sometimes not the best place. Bury it in the middle battery, tape it to the side with duct tape, and cover with a bit of insulation so you measure battery temper…

  Loosing 2v in a couple days indicates a cell inside has gone bad. A 6V battery has three, 2V cells internally, wired in series.
