Aye. I built and managed his web site for him as a favor during the trip when the "Columbian Thing" happened, and I also edited all his online journals from that trip. Those ultimately became his first book (I also did the first few editing passes on that book as well).
And to Crewzer:
Yea, there are a lot of decent RV type units out there - but I need the roof space for solar. Another option is the stuff from Danhard:

Understood. Check the "self contained" unit: http://www.dometic.com/enus/Americas/USA/Truck/HVAC-Solutions/Battery-Powered-HVAC-Guide/Choices/

And these small regular ol' A/C's with good EER specs:

Re: smallest, most efficient A/C ?
The Friedrich units seem to be pretty nice. Comparable to the Frigidaire at only about 3 times the price... -

just adding a few more links related to the topic for future referance.
Adler/Barbour ColdMachine

I hope to have more details on these units after contacting Dometic. -
Re: smallest, most efficient A/C ?
That EnviroCool system requires a seawater intake and discharge...and a water pump.
That Cuddy unit looks pretty good, though I think it would probably take 2 of them to make a serious difference in even a small RV. -

I hadnt looked into the envirocool system much but now I can rule that one out.
and the mnf sugested retail is $2700 on the cuddy unit. I'll pass on that one also.
the portable AC units are looking more and more attractive. I just wish I could find a 3000BTU window unit, I could modify that easily to be "portable" but all the window units start at 5000BTU. I can probably make that work but Id rather find a smaller unit. -
Re: smallest, most efficient A/C ?
Yes, the portables do look attractive for a small RV setup. Easy install if nothing else. I do wonder about venting heat with them. Most I've seen have one vent pipe, but a couple have two vent pipes.
With two pipes, obviously air is drawn in from outside to replace the hot air that is vented out. But with only one pipe, the heat goes out, but were does the air come from to replace that which is vented out? Hopefully it's not drawing cool air from inside and blowing it to the outside.
The other issue I have with the portables as per RV use is that the ones I've seen don't have particularly good EERs - which means for the same BTU of cooling, you have to find a way to provide more electricity. -

thanks for the tips!
Im still looking arround for an ac..
Ive found some portables in the 5000btu range but only single hose. does anyone know of one that is 5000 btu or less and has dual hose?
I seriously considering getting the smallest window unit I can find and making it portable by fabricating enclosures and duct work. I think this will be the most efficient way.
thanks
