Can you use regular 12v batteries for the solar panels or does it have to be special gel type batteries?

if by regular you mean car starting batteries, then no you can't use these as they are meant for deep temporary discharges with a heavy recharge following. the battery design is different and would cause the battery to soon fail in solar applications. do not be confused though because not all flooded lead acid batteries are starting batteries so you don't have to go with gels. many starting batteries have a cca rating or cold cranking amps and is a dead giveaway.
