Shunt question

I am setting up a new system which has a shunt for a battery monitor. So one side of the shunt is connected to battery negative and the other is connected to the inverter negative. I think I understood this clearly at one time, but now i'm confused.
To which side of the shunt should ground be connected?

I forgot to mention that I am not enabling the ground fault protection in the charge controller. I want to ground the battery negative.

It does not matter for safety, but put the ground on the common bus side. That way, if there is some sort of short circuit to ground, the shunt will record the total energy flow.If you put the ground between the shunt and the battery, any leak to ground will bypass the shunt and be unmeasured.BillNear San Francisco California: 3.5kWatt Grid Tied Solar power system+small backup genset
