Hi Guys
I have a vertical axis generator, it works at a speed of around 80 rpm, and I expect torque of 50Nm (I will use it in the water - speed=2m/s).
Do you guys have any idea of how much it costs a 1:5 or a 1:7 ratio gearbox? The wind generators usually work at around 400rpm.
Talking about speed, do you guys know the speed of this fisher paykel motor? I´ve got one here too.

A gear box can cost you upwards of 50% of your harvested energy (losses in gear train).

80 RPM for the generator? Or is that what you expect the turbine to spin at? In general, would it not be better to redesign the turbine to spin faster (low head turbine, horizontal axis, or something)?

My Fisher Paykel washer spins at 1,000 RPM (top speed).
