US - North American standard - is 240 VAC 60 Hz 'split-phase' using a grounded neutral at half Voltage so that you have 240 VAC or 120 VAC available.

UK - European standard - is 230 VAC 50 Hz. No center tap/half Voltage.

In the basics, what Marc typed is exactly correct and pretty much all you need to now about "basic" electricity for North America vs Europe and residential power.

In the US, we talk about split phase power for 120/240 VAC (center tapped transformer). The common poly phase power is 3 phase and it not common in the US for residential power. In some countries, 3 phase power is used in residential. And, 3 phase applications are not "simple" any may even be region/utility specific (in US, can be 208/240 VAC with 277 single phase/480 VAC 3 phase power.... "Wye" and "Delta" connected transformers, etc.

Specifically, is there something specific about UK power that you have questions about?
