feature-0-1408551965533.jpg In the early solar PV days, trackers were a necessity to maximize the energy output from very expensive solar modules. Unfortunately, in those days trackers were mechanically complex and unreliable (remember TV antenna rotors?), and the control systems were expensive and finicky. As solar module pricing declined, the interest in trackers for small systems began to wane.

    I'm glad to hear that trackers have improved and are still viable even if only at the utility scale.

    If you get close enough to the equator and are doing a solar farm with ground mounted panels anyway, the single axis horizontal row trackers are relatively simple to set up and maintain. Not too much worry about one row shading the next since you need to leave space between rows for access anyway.
