The Home Depot had several units on the showroom floor this one in white was 799.00
energy star, frost free energy consumption( KWh/year) 615
freezer type upright
energy star certified
control type- electro-mechanical

i did not even know that they made such a thing. i thought it was either a freezer or it was a refrigerator. i know i live down south but how many others knew they made these as well?

i'm still trying to figure out what to do about my situation. i already have a great little freezer 5.0 , and i love it as a freezer. still need a refrigerator though. if i convert it to a ref./ well i will still need a freezer.
i have a few $"s coming my way in Sept as my disability payment, it certainly isn't much so i'm trying to get exactly what i need Carib. has me in here somewhere, sorry i'm still not to savvy on the computer as of yet, but i'm getting a little better i"m looking for my signature. well just going to try this is krharley

They are not cheap but have you considered an LP Crystal Cold, 18 CF frig freezer combo, saw a scratch and dent yesterday for 1700$, mint is about 2200$, but an awesome work horse.

Use the Energy Star website--You can download and put stuff in a spread sheet or use various advanced/filters to narrow your search--Very nice (assuming that the vendors are 1/2 way honest about power usage figures--Has not always been true):

You can load into a spread sheet and get some interesting suggestions... For example, vertical freezers, make a column called kWH/cuft and sort on that:

I guess I'm not sure what you're asking, are you looking to buy something or convert something? $799 seems like a lot of money to spend on a freezer and having an upright versus a chest freezer converted to a fridge pretty much defeats the reason for doing a conversion.

What is your end goal with this?

i'm sorry guys, started on new medication and totally forgot i posted that. that's the reason for the delay in reply. what i winded up doing was someone brought me a Lg. RV type LP gas/elec/12v unit that had been sitting in the woods with the RV caving in all around it. it had a printed circuit board and other unidentified parts. looked nice for its day, bur wounded. what i did was dis-connected and removed all that stuff. i took a LP tank with regulator and went through my brass fitting box until i came up with enough parts to hook directly to the burner with a control knob to adjust the flame. i also insulated it with a sheet of foam and prettied up the doors with 1/4 paneling type stuff i had on hand. i cannot believe it works as well as it does without all the pieces and parts. i have the flame in a good spot. if i turn it down, the temp goes down, if i turn it up too much it starts to freeze the refrigerator portion. so 1/2 way mark seems to be perfect. i thought one or the other would work, but both are doing well. the freezer will freeze very fast. ice/meat, anything quickly. the food seems to stay good much longer as well. its tall and has lots of space. i only filled the tank once so far and its a kinda big tank more than 7 gallons, but not much. its 30.00 to fill the tank, and they tell me its an odd size. so i'm real happy with it even though i don't understand it. their is a trey that catches the water so it doesn't freeze over with ice. i know it will because i had the flame up too high for too long and that's what happened.actually i saw a small puddle to the left on the floor, so i ran a flex line thru that hose that goes to the trey. now it empty's in the trey but not very much. most of time its dry, sometimes about 1/4 if that water. so guess it doesn't really need all that stuff, even had a telephone looking line going into board.

now someone in the neighborhood also thru out a up right freezer. i rounded my brother up and went and got it. all that seems wrong with it is the start relay. yea, it was rattling and had got too hot and was brittle. its 70.00 for the part on e-bay. but i had a hard start kit and was able to get it going on the generator and it freezes up good. so i wanted to order the thermostat and convert it. i'll see if my solar will run it. i'm sure it will in the winter, but still having a wrestling match with the older A/C i have. i have to buy a new one , energy star. so i'll have it in case the propane unit quits on me. but i really don't think so, that's running to good for me. still i want to convert it.

yea thanks for the link. it makes such a big difference. i'm do a check in Sept of some back pay for disability. i had already measured all the A/C's i had gathered up over a few years because i would tinker with them,try to get them going. some would some wouldn't. but using the kill-a-watt meter really shows ya about what they really use. it was a bit shocking how much some were really using. the energy star is worth the extra dollars i learned. then some of the 5-6,000 BTU's would use more or right at what a 10 and 1200 BTU were using only 100 BTU difference. that's crazy. of course i'm no engineer and they were all picked up on side of road.so guess one has to figure that in. i did get one old,old 26,000 BTU 240 volt window unit that i got running but i couldn't measure because i don't have 240 volts. had to take it in pick up to friends house. its fan needed oiling. would like to see what it uses with a different meter,clamp on DC. but the rest i'll junk, got a big pile of stuff. i'll put it all with my back pay towards a new A/C. for my square footage is one piece of plywood 4x8=32 and my floor is 14 sheets of plywood. my square footage is 384 ? is that correct?

no i'm sorry, not the best communicator . very poor at it. no, i was talking about the spare parts= the BP panels i had, and cc, 12 volt inverters. but i found uses for everything. i'm still learning, but i have some time on my hands now. being poor as hell and in need in the mother of invention uh? i don't know if u read about the LP fridge i rigged up. is their a simple way that it works without all their parts. i often wonder but my thoughts get over ridden by its performance. now i cut a hole in my back wall, picked it up a foot and shoved it through giving me my space back, and i know it needs to be vented right? it has a cap like square thing sitting their on the round hole where the flame is about 3 ft long. it the way its made it sits a bit up, maybe 1/4 inch . and i found the brush u clean the pipe out with sits in their with a hook. is it supposed to stay in their, the brush? while its running, just getting hot? is it that way so it doesn't get lost? they say it must be level and vented. the back of the unit is sitting outside on my back porch where i do all my tinkering around. is that good enough or should that piece come off while its in use? i figure you would know

No, the cleaning brush does not stay in the chimney.
That hook in there is probably for the baffle, which may be missing. That is a necessary part too; it will not run efficiently without it or without it in the right position. Basically it's a short twist of metal on a rod that hangs down inside the tube and causes the hot air to twist slightly as it rises which increases the draft effect.

Yes, they need to be vented. Which means in an area where there is good air flow or else with an intake and outlet just for the unit. Lots of the cabins around here have them outside on a semi-open porch and that works. We had one inside for ages, but it was no problem because the place is so drafty (built 60+ years ago by people who had trouble understanding that the logs were supposed to fit together without 1" gaps between them).

DANGER, DANGER, DANGER !!!!
Since parts of the burner are missing and therefore not burning properly, and IF this propane fridge is NOT vented outside, you, your family and any visiting friends are in great danger of carbon monoxide poisoning / death!
Even if it is vented outside, any leaks of exhaust gasses could also kill you.

oh, yes makes sense. that is so interesting. i called it a brush because i thought you cleaned the tube of rust to make it smooth. i'm laughing now. but no it's all their. i had the top piece on backward though. i see where the hook fits into that piece. i didn't know what they meant by vented so thanks for clearing that up. i cut a hole and shoved it through the wall. so the whole thing is outside. figured that's why the cover for the flame not to blow out. it had all the parts, just e-bay wanted 100.00 for a new board, $$$$ for this and that the wire ends were all rusted. so i took a chance to see and am glad i did. its level, it looks nice, took up no space inside. my screened in porch is plenty big enough for it, i like looking at it, feeling all the coils, i keep close tabs on it. and i'm still on that first tank. i
i'm kinda laughing at those 1" spaces between logs too............

calm yourself. although i can understand your concern. but it is burning properly or it would not be working like it was new. the flame is nice and blue, it is not being blown out. all the parts were their, i just dis-connected all the electrical. i agree it probably shouldn't be working without all the electrical but it is a 3 way fuel source 12 volts , 120 volts, and LP gas. so those electrical parts must have gone to the 12 volt/120 volts circuits. the unit is fully outside and sealed very well from inside. i also have a wood stove and all the carbon monoxide alarms for a small place. fire alarms. its ok, really

Different propane refrigerators have different electrical needs. What you describe is a "3-way" unit which can run from propane, 120 VAC, or 12 VDC. These are usually small, have no electronic controls, and the only thing electricity does is replace the propane flame with electric heating element. As you might guess on 12 VDC that's a pretty nasty power draw. These are becoming less common.

Some newer units have only 120 VAC to replace propane, and still need 12 VDC for the controls even when running off 'shore power': the AC only powers the heating element to take the place of the propane. I just had to explain this to someone here in fact.

sure, didn't mean to offend. and really i didn't think it was going to work right , but a month into it.......... yea i had a small one about 3 years ago like that and it just quit working, flame was still their, but wouldn't get cold any longer. it was all 3 as well. the one i have now looks like a really nice unit. its a Norcold with lots of electronics. the small one i had was a Domestic or something like that, and i had taken off all the parts to that one. i actually used one of the copper tube for the line so it was snug inside, it was manual like that with control knobs, and i used that on it as well

The reason I mentioned the carbon monoxide thing is because my cousin and his family almost lost their lives a few years back with an older "house type" propane fridge that had been all cleaned up, burners and all and appeared to be operating perfectly, also with a nice blue flame. One of them woke in the early morning with a splitting headache, some of the others were vomiting with headaches. They found out it was CO that nearly did them in.
Used to be a serious problem too in Northern Ontario with remote cottages. Over Winter when the place was shut up, mice would build nests in the exhaust, or ait intake, the folks would arrive in the spring, light the fridge, go to bed and never wake up. I didn't intend to be appearing to be jumping all over you, just wanted to be very sure you understood the risks involved after reading about the baffle missing and discussions about where the brush should hang etc. We only have one life.
New ones in these parts have a CO detector that if triggered, shuts down the burner completely.

yes, that was very close call.where was their fridge located? was it inside the house? i have a CO detector, my refrigerator is completely outside. they took care in getting the unit and the lip goes almost 2" -2 1/2". still the mice/rats shouldn't be able to get inside the pipe while it's running because its too hot, right? but yea those mice can get in anywhere. i had a problem with them when i had chickens with corn feed.i had right at 30 small rats we killed with poison, they were attracted to the corn feed. so i'v seen first hand about them, and can see that happening in units where no one was around. so i have a detector,unit sealed outside, i should be ok right?
no i didn't think you were jumping on me. experiences like that stick with you. like in these parts you hear stories of folks putting generators inside their home when storms come for weeks at a time. one thinks well how stupid is that? what were they thinking? the noise alone would be too much. but i guess they didn't realize this, cord too short, what ever the reason.
and my unit was in the woods a long time.but i left it in the sunshine for about 3 days, bleached the heck out of it.their was some weird bugs that were hard but looked like big ants, never saw them before, so i had to wait till i was sure they were dead and left in the sun few more days. it cleaned up real good other than that.
