Persistent AC Output Backfeed error on Outback VFX 3648

I am getting an AC Output Backfeed error on a VFX 3648. Nothing was changed except that we added 2 panels the same day it started acting up. We made no other changes to the system or disconnected any other cables except the panel interconnects.
Configuration:
1 VFX 3648 Inverter
1 MX 60 Charge controller
16 L16 batteries
8 140 watt Kyocera panels.
The inverter has a generator backup.
Even with AC inputs and Output wires totally disconnected, I am getting this error recurring. Only the two battery cables are connected and a chassis ground. Turned off and on using a Mate. The inverter stays on for 5 seconds and reverts to the error. Disconnected the batteries for 10 seconds to allow the inverter to cycle down. Error persists. I put the inverter on an entirely new system to test but it gets the same error. Sound like a hardware failure?

Re: Persistent AC Output Backfeed error on Outback VFX 3648
Alan,
As you are probably aware, here's the OutBack inverter manual's (rev 7.2, pg. 46) expanation for the "Backfeed error":AC OUTPUT BACKFEED indicates that another AC source of power was connected to the AC
output of the FX. Usually this is an installation issue. It often occurs when there is an X-240
transformer in the system that hasn’t been installed properly. Also, check that there are no
connections between the AC input and AC output circuitry.
You can also register and post over on OutBack's forum. Lots of smart/experienced folks over there as well, but with a greater focus on OutBack products. See: http://www.outbackpower.com/forum/index.php

Thanks, All,
The inverter definitely went south. A new inverter had no problems.
Will contact Outback TS for help.
