Re: I guess we've been overbuilding….
I get the tone of your post, I think it should be mentioned it is an overpriced kit, that does not work miracles. While with a quick look it does not seem to out right lie. Seems very intentionally misleading. I say this so people new to solar do not fall for this product. Atleast look into it better without spending their money.

Re: I guess we've been overbuilding….
he refers to the box as the generator. false. the sun is the generator. the pvs are the collectors. the box would be the inverter (to provide the power in the way most items are accustomed) and the battery storage (if there is a battery in there and i doubt there is as he says it provides power sunup to sunset) which would smooth out the ins and outs of the sun from clouds keeping the power consistent.
misleading for sure as this thing would not provide high power for very long if it would provide the 1800w he mentions and i imagine that to be the rating of the inverter used which is probably a cheap modsine.
looking over his other en devours i guess we can conclude we can pay for the simple solar generator with ghost money. -

Their specs show that the battery in the "magic box" is a 70ah battery. And I agree too, it is likely a MSW inverter although they do not specify that.Off-Grid in Central Florida since 2005, Full-Time since June 2014 | 12 X Sovello 205w panels, 9 X ToPoint 220w panels, 36x ToPoint 225w panels (12,525 watts total) | Custom built single-axis ground mounts | Complete FP2 Outback System: 3 x FM80, 2 x VFX3648, X240 Transformer, FLEXnet-DC, Mate-3, Hub-10, FW500 AC/DC | 24 x Trojan L16RE-B Batteries 1110ah @ 48v | Honda EU7000is Generator and a pile of "other" Generators | Home-Made PVC solar hot water collector | Custom data logging software http://www.somewhatcrookedcamp.com/monitormate.html -
Re: I guess we've been overbuilding….
ok on the 70ah battery as i guess i missed that. not that it matters as it's still junk.;) -
Re: I guess we've been overbuilding….
The specsmanship on a Zantrex 1800 powerhub is 1800w for 10 minutes and only 1400w continuous MSW.
You know, it used to be that American-made meant quality and that the Chinese would knock-it-off and be junk. Now your typical american like this guy doesn't know jack and has to resort to ripping off a 2nd rate chinese product and passing it off as the solution to our energy problems. -

$1,500 for This and a couple of 60W panels and a $20 PWM controller.
OK, so this isn't a bad little thing for folks with money to burn who couldn't build one themselves, and it is Cheaper than the one the guys in AZ are selling, and has more capacity than the ones at Costco, but still too expensive. Might be good for people who tent camp with kids who cannot live without their portable electronics...
One would do better to buy 3 or four of those harbor fraught kits...
Speaking of HF solar kits, I drove through a neighborhood in Texas that had a trailer with 6 sets of the HF panels on it. -

;)So was it still burning? -

Re: I guess we've been overbuilding….Many AHJ's refer to a PV system as a generator.
further proof of ahj's ignorance and incompetence. it would be akin to a cop calling a car a roller coaster imo. -

I like the way he just dragged the heavy bit along the ground, then he glibly said it all weighs less than 100 pounds.
Wonderful!40' Crown bus with 2kW of tiltable panels on the roof:
Eight Sharp 255W, two Morningstar TS-MPPT-60, Magnum MS2000, Champion C46540 generator converted to propane, eight golfcart batteries, and maybe a small Exeltech inverter for the fridger.
