    Back in college, I found it necessary to have my gall mitigated and my effrontery tin-plated to avoid problems.....
    One suggestion is to supplement or re-inforce emoticons through use of the dedicated "sarcasm font". It can help prevent somebody from taking the statement seriously even with the smiley attached.
