There is a local guy on Craig's List selling a 'Titan Industrial Diesel Generator" I was unable to find any good info on it. The add states 30 hrs run time on it and is asking $1000.00. Anyone with any real world experience with one of these?

Re: Titan Industrial Diesel Generator
Yep. Must be a Chinese unit. The Craigslist add said the thing retailed for like $5500. -
Re: Titan Industrial Diesel Generator
Hi verdigo,
I have no personal experience with these, but the seem to clog craigslist. Opinion: el-cheapo probably junk.
A friend bought a very similar Chinese generator and it indeed was crap. Very noisy, things started breaking on and falling off of the engine within the first few hours. He did not pay very much for it, but he was very unhappy with it, and there was no one to back a warranty.
It is possible that the Titan is a bit of a different animal. But be careful. VicOff Grid - Two systems -- 4 SW+ 5548 Inverters, Surrette 4KS25 1280 AH X2@48V, 11.1 KW STC PV, 4X MidNite Classic 150 w/ WBjrs, Beta KID on S-530s, MX-60s, MN Bkrs/Boxes. 25 KVA Polyphase Kubota diesel, Honda Eu6500isa, Eu3000is-es, Eu2000, Eu1000 gensets. Thanks Wind-Sun for this great Forum. -

Dennis, yes I have experience with them. Basically, they are Chinese units with a 418cc Yanmar clone engine. They can't sell them otherwise so there are people that make a business of selling them on craigslist and eBay, advertising them as "new in the box" or "slightly used" at a drastically reduced price, which is not drastically reduced at all. Sometimes it is the same person with different user names pedaling this stuff on craigslist.
Here is an example that it only took me less than 2 minutes to find on the craigslist here Take a look at these two links:
http://eauclaire.craigslist.org/for/3825957922.html
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/csw/tls/3841459496.html
Now, here's the same unit with yet a different name on it
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/grq/3871278708.html
and yet again, with still another name on it

I think you get the idea. Don't buy one. If you want a portable diesel in that size class this is an example of a high quality one:
http://us.yanmar.com/products/generators-pumps/epa-certified/ydg-series-generators/ydg5500/
However, be aware that you are basically looking at over $4,000 and you're not going to find any "good deals" - you will pay almost new price for a used one with thousands of hours on it.

Thanks Chris. I'll be the first to say I know squat about generators. I do like diesels though. My two daily drivers are diesels. An 83 Volvo 245 and a 1981 VW Rabbit Pickup. I did put the turbo-diesel versions of the engines in them so that they would get out of their own way though. I have been commuting 200 miles plus delivering/picking up parts in these for 4 years. They will run on most anything for fuel. I have been thinking some sort of PTO generator driven off one of the Rabbit's axles, but like I said I don't know a lot about generators. Do you think an automotive cruise control could maintain generator frequency? Just a thought, but I have more projects than I have time. I have a little Honda EM2500 I took in on some work. I will probably run that till I run up on a deal. Thanks again.

No, it won't. Not very good. That's been tried before.
Used high-quality diesel generators (small ones) are hard to find because they never break, and the people that buy them typically buy them because they need diesel power (like fuel availability on construction sites, etc..). If you comb craigslist sometimes you see them on there, like this other Robin diesel I found in Escanaba, Michigan:
http://up.craigslist.org/for/3877657159.html
But for the most part, new ones are going to be the only option, and the smallest and cheapest high-quality diesel gensets have an entry price of around $3,000, usually with either Japanese (Yanmar, Subaru-Robin, Perkins, Kubota, etc.) or German (Deutz, Hatz, etc.) engines.

Here's another Craig's list generator. http://nashville.craigslist.org/grd/3882863315.html I might have a look at this. I e-mailed the seller and asked how many hours. I was in the Army 20 years but remember most smaller generators as gasoline (MO-Gas). -

That's an Onan diesel. I can't remember the military designation of it, but they're good gensets.
