Well, in germany we're a bit further already :)
at first coal fired power plants, - een the big lignite blocks here - need much less than a day. (usually several hours) Also the utilitys operate with weather prognosis and operate their power plants accordinggly - so even the lignite plocks here can follow the demand and the renewable output, so the german gas turbines and gas / stam blocks are mostely out of service now. Whet is happening is that due to the close down of nuclear capacity and the expectation of a lack of capacity, too many new coal fired power plants have been built. They are usually used to export electricty now, and put gas fired power plants in neighbouring country s out of service, since peak power during the day is mostly delivered by solar today here. And no - no wind turbine here pays utility to get the power - this is the utility's problem due to the feed in tarif (and in fact it's not because of the feed in tarif, but a sideffect of a simplification in the electricity market rules) And a side effect of parts of the grid not being able to transfer already sold power in the wanted direction.
