Outback FlexMax-80 - HUB/MATE needed?

Two Outback FlexMax-80 charge controllers:

The manual doesn't really apply to this particular system: They have two FlexMax-80 cc's, but the inverters are not Outback. Can I hook up the two FlexMax-80's together with a comm cable, or do I have to use an Outback HUB?

To connect any two OB units, including two charge controllers, you need both a hub and a MATE.

Frankly, it's a waste of time and money. Put a remote temp sensor on each one, and program them with the same parameters. They don't really need to "talk" to each other.
