Keep bugging them Dave! If they could come up with a power-saver mode,
that could be plugged in to existing units, I'm sure they would sell many more systems.
    They must realize that!

All they need to do is get rid of the stupid Instant Heat (or cool) subroutine.
If the system has been using 460w for hours (going off and on) , there is no need for it
to jump up to 1460w when I ask for one more degree C of heat!
It only stays there for a minute or two, then drops back down,
but in the cold winter, it could peak up much higher.. Like 2.6kw plus!

When, all it really needs to do, is to stay on a little longer at 460w..!.

During the sunny hours, I could run this Sanyo off my back-up system PV.
If the weather is not too extreme, the power use isn't really that high.

Yesterday, it was in the high 40s F, and we had the Sanyo keeping the
whole house at 70-71F all day, using 6 kwh total.
    That's equal to a 24/7 load of 250 watts.
(Our old 42" Panasonic Plasma TV uses well over 300w)!

If it had not been totally over-cast, and we had some solar gain coming into
the southern windows, our daily use would have been a lot less. Maybe 50%.

During mild sunny days, I don't think my 24,000 BTU Sanyo is too big for PV.
Since it throttles down to pretty low BTUs, 90% of the time.

Paralleling the outputs of inverters for more sine waves!

I found a low cost 1.5KW True sinewave inverter on Ebay (48vdc in 110vac out)
that will run my little basement freezer and the new dehumidifier.

It beeps three times whenever the dehumidifier compressor starts up,
but recovers and runs both loads just fine.
It might go off-line if they both surge at the same time!

Anyways, I'm running this new 1.5KW TSW inverter off my 48vdc bank,
which is being fed by the 800w PV array.

Testing shows, I'm able to tie in my 500w tracking array,
using a 1.2KW GTI to make AC, that I connect to the 1.5KW TSW AC output.
(The GTI syncs up on the TSW)

When the load is light (50-400watts), the GTI does 90% of the work,
with only a small amount of battery-bank current going into the TSW inverter.

So, during good sunlight hours, I should be able to run about 1kw of intermittent AC loads
(using real sine waves!) and still be able to charge up the 48v bank..

Maybe, I could add the kitchen refrigerator to the sunny-day load.. 8)

If it was sunny all month, 1 KW @ 4KWh per day could cut about 20%
off my bill.. $20 is better than nothing.. :p

It starts with just a fridge, but the fridge is just a "gateway appliance". Gradually you move on to the harder stuff. Big screen TVs, air compressors, and finally it leads you to well pumps. You say you can just quit any day you want to and go back to just your fridge, but you never do it. All the trips to your PV dealer eventually leave you completely broke and without a job from all the tinkering. Your friends try an intervention, showing you an easier life is possible if you try something called "utility power", but you refuse them. What do they know? They've never tried solar!

It's a good thing there is no PV version of the old Erector Mechano set ... or we might all be there sooner....;);)
