Has anybody heard of or is currently using this device? It's called a KVAR EC unit and it says it reduces your power bill 8 to 25 percent. Also claims to make your electric devices last longer, run cooler. The site is http://www.safewireenergy.com/index.html

Any info would be great.

    Oh sure it does.

Most likely an attempt at PF correcting via capacitor.
A Kill-A-Watt meter and a few lifestyle changes will net you more.

    Similar product discussed here before:

    Power Save 1200 Capacitor

And starting around Post #14 of the Scam Alert thread about these type of units.

As all good marketing, a tiny bit of truth wrapped around a whole bunch of marketing hype / over priced products.

And, the Kill-a-Watt Meter that Marc types about--Very handy to take around the home and figure out what appliances are wasting your energy (plug into wall, plug 120 VAC 15 amp max. appliance into Kill-a-Watt meter).

The only thing the unit is guaranteed to do is lighten your wallet due to the purchase price.

Power factor correction should not be attempted by the consumer. Generally correction is done to a figure of 0.9 and not 1. Power factor correction of 1 can be catastrophic. Many devices like ballast fluros have PF correction built in. Most appliances are inherently resistive only items like unload transformers and induction motors are main culprits.
