I have just purchased these batteries from ebay, GNB absolyte 6x 2v 1600 amp 12v bank. My question is should they be mounted horizontally or vertically

I guess you are typing about something like these (PDF download).

See if you can find a manual for them--but as I understand, they are AGM and can be installed either horizontal or vertical... However, the best orientation is horizontal as this keeps the electrolyte more evenly distributed through out the mat. If installed vertically (caps on top), the electrolyte can migrate towards the bottom of the cell.

Obviously, if you run them on their sides, rack them solidly so that they can't get knocked over (me being from earthquake country).

Cool--The web is great. Found the PDF Download of the installation manual.
Absolyte batteries may be either arranged vertically (50A and 90A for float applications, 50A only for cycling applications) or horizontally (50A, 90A and 100A). Horizontal configurations are preferred. Figures 6 and 7 are typical arrangements and are not intended to represent total configuration possibilities.
