Medical Missionaries
GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWSHIP (FACILITIES)

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP
The Medical Missionaries Global Health Fellowship (Facilities) offers a person with technical training and skills (e.g., in construction, maintenance, electricity, plumbing) a rewarding opportunity to apply those skills in a health care facility, serve the very poor in a developing country, and gain valuable international experience. The Fellow will spend one year in Thomassique, Haiti, working at St. Joseph’s Clinic, a facility built and supported by Medical Missionaries (www.medmissionaries.org). The Fellow will work with the Clinic’s all-Haitian staff and a few other U.S. volunteers working in the medical field. The Fellowship begins in the summer of 2011 and ends in the summer of 2012. This is a non-paid Fellowship.
During the year in Haiti, the Fellow will oversee the operation and maintenance of the Clinic’s physical facilities and train the Haitian staff to assume full responsibility for the facilities. The specific responsibilities of the Fellow are described in the attached Job Description.
The Fellow will live with Clinic staff and other U.S. volunteers in a house adjacent to the Clinic. Living facilities include bedroom, shared bathroom, potable water, wireless satellite Internet access, and a washing machine. A cook prepares two meals a day. Medical Missionaries covers all these expenses as part of the Fellowship. Medical Missionaries also pays for all transportation costs for the Fellow, including two to three return trips to the U.S. for periods of two to three weeks.
The Fellow should be prepared to live in a rural, underdeveloped setting, and to be one of only a few foreigners in Thomassique for most of the year. To learn more about living conditions in Thomassique and the surrounding areas, please see some of the “Tours” available in the Photo Gallery of the Medical Missionaries website (www.medmissionaries.org/id4.html).
ABOUT MEDICAL MISSIONARIES
Medical Missionaries is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to providing health care, medical support, medical education, and training to under-served communities around the world. ABOUT ST. JOSEPH’S CLINIC IN THOMASSIQUE, HAITI
Thomassique is a large town in Haiti’s Central Plateau, near the border with the Dominican Republic. In 2006, Medical Missionaries built St. Joseph’s Clinic, the first permanent health care facility the region’s 100,000 inhabitants ever had. St. Joseph’s Clinic offers primary care consultations, emergency and trauma care, maternal consultations and deliveries, x-ray and lab services, a pharmacy, and a pediatric vaccination program. All of the Clinic employees are Haitian. The facility is open five days a week for ambulatory care and twenty-four hours a day for emergency care. Medical Missionaries provides the clinic with medicines and supplies in addition to paying staff salaries. Several times a year, teams of American physicians and surgeons visit the Clinic to assist the staff and perform operations.
Clinic facilities are complex and require regular maintenance. They include:
• Six concrete buildings (the main Clinic, Pharmacy, Staff House, New Wing, X-Ray, Guard House), a wooden structure (Guest House), and several sheds and storage containers
• Three septic systems
• A 30,000 gallon water tower and distribution system
• An ultraviolet water purification system in the Staff House
• A satellite-based Internet system, with WiFi
• A self-contained (off-grid) electrical system that includes 48 solar panels and batteries plus a 25 kw generator
• Two vehicles (Toyota and Land Rover)
Maintaining these facilities require experience in construction, electricity, plumbing, maintenance, problem-solving, and creative use of scarce resources.
ELIGIBILITY & SELECTION PROCESS
The Medical Missionaries Fellowship for Facilities is directed towards someone who has training and experience in facilities maintenance and repair and who wants to serve the poor. Candidates must demonstrate maturity of thought, a well-developed sense of ethics, strong social and organizational skills, and a commitment to reducing health disparities worldwide. We are especially interested in those applicants who have exhibited a high degree of leadership, self-direction, responsibility, and willingness to take on tasks that are at times less than glamorous. Applicants should be in good physical health.

Persons interested in applying for this Fellowship should send an e-mail Letter of Interest to Brian Dierks (the current Fellow) at:
Please provide the following:
• A brief description of yourself
