120V from a 240V generator

A friend has an Outback FLEXpower ONE prewired single inverter system with a model VFXR3648A inverter/charger.   AC input spec for battery charging is 120V 60A.  There is no provision for 240V input.  He wants to add a 7.5 to 10KW propane autostart generator for charging batteries.   Problem is that there aren't any 120V only stationary propane generators sold in the US market.  Everything available is 240 volt.  Generac says loading just one leg of a 240 generator output is bad and can burn out a generator.    OutBack tech support is stumped and has nothing to offer.     The two solutions I see are to use a 240 to 120 step down transformer or to put a dummy load such as a resistance heater on the other output leg.  Anyone have better ways of addressing this?

Thanks

"Generac says loading just one leg of a 240 generator output is bad and can burn out a generator."

Pulling one leg and the neutral to an outlet was my first thought, so good to know how wrong I was in advance.
